Lighthouse Keeper Residence
Point San Luis Lighthouse was built in the “Prairie Victorian” style. Originally one of three, with it’s sister lighthouses located in Eureka and San Diego, it is the only one left intact.
The Master Bedroom was not the largest room in the house. The Head Lightkeeper and his wife took a room at the back of the house- farthest from the fog horn.
WWII at the Lighthouse
Fifteen days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Union Oil tanker S.S. Montebello takes on a cargo of oil at Port San Luis. A few hours later, Japanese submarine I-21 sinks the Montebello near Cambria, about four miles west of San Simeon. The West Coast immediately went onto wartime footing with extra patrols, watch towers and blackout conditions.
At Avila, amphibious maneuvers took place on the beach. On the Lighthouse property, a radio listening station is built in front of the Keepers residence and a concrete block duplex is built to house the increased military personnel.
