Welcome! You have arrived at Lighthouse Beach. Here are some points looking South across the bay to help you orient yourself.
When Point San Luis Lighthouse was built in 1890, the only access to this area was by sea, so a pier was built to deliver building supplies and later to service the Lighthouse and the people who lived here. The pier is gone but at low tide you can see some of the concrete footings on the small island and on the cliff at the top of the stairs.
Whaler’s Island is at the end of the breakwater. During the 1880’s, this was the site of an active whaling station.
Smith Island is the terraced island between Whaler’s Island and Port Harford Pier. Starting in 1884, the Smith family lived on the island in houses cantilevered over the ocean. They were followed by two sets of Gregory families, one of which had 14 children.
