Point SLO is Two New Disability Access Features

The Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers are proud to announce two new aspects of our Disability Access program, which encourages people with disabilities to visit the lighthouse.

Ramp for those with Mobility Issues
The ramp for those who have concerns over mobility is now open and ready for use. The ramp was paid for by a grant from the Avila Beach Community Foundation and from funds received from PG&E. It was expertly constructed by workers from the “Tuesday Work Crew” who put in major effort to build a ramp on what was an uneven surface. Point SLO also has wheelchairs on hand for use by guests. Please check the box requesting a wheelchair when you purchase the tickets, or call and inform staff prior to your visit.

Guide Book and Brochures for Hard-of-Hearing Guests
The second and most recently completed project is the lighthouse guidebook for the hearing impaired. The guidebook, and accompanying trolley brochure, were both constructed by Point SLO’s Cal Poly intern, Lauren Hinkley. The guide book assists people with hearing challenges so they can still take the tour and receive all the information a docent would provide but in written form. The guide book is light and easily held. It is available upon request.

It is important to the Point SLO Lighthouse Keeper’s that we are inclusive of all people, so we have been working hard to ensure that our lighthouse tours are accessible to all.
